Palpation of an Abdominal mass

Descriptive features of intra-abdominal masses to be noted as 
For any abdominal mass the following should be assessed
  • Site : The region involved
  • Size which must be measured, and shape
  • Surface—Regular / irregular
  • Edge — Regular / irregular
  • Consistency - Soft / firm/ hard
  • Mobility and movement with inspiration 
  • Free movement or restricted movement or no movement
  • Whether it is pulsatile or not 
  • Whether one can get above / below the mass
  • Bimanually palpable and ballotable
