Causes of Intercostal pulsation

Normally at rest there is  no visible intercostal pulsation.
2nd intercostal pulsations that is palpable is called as Palpable shock of P2 seen in
  • Pulmonary  artery hypertension
  • Atrial septal defect
Palpable pulmonary ejection dick
  • Pulmonary stenosis
  • Pulmonary artery dilatation
Palpable pulmonary artery pulsations
  • Pulmonary artery dilatation
  • Children
  • VSD (Ventricular ductus artenosus)
  • PDA (Patent ductus artenosus)
  • Idiopathic dilatation of pulmonary artery
3rd intercostal space pulsations
  • Left ventricular outflow tract pulsations
  • RV endomyocardial fibrosis
  • Ebstein's anomaly
  • Aortic regurgitation
  • Hyperdynamic states
Posterior intercostal pulsations
  • Visible pulsation of the Posterior intercostal vessel is seen in Coarctation of aorta - Suzman's sign.
Left parasternal pulsation
Right ventriculaerenlargement leads to left parasternal pulsation, gross right ventricular  enlargement is seen  in
ASD --pulsation over the entire precordium
LV enlargement -pulsation of part of precordium.
